A new UN Climate Change Conference will be held at the end of this year. It will take place in Copenhagen, and the world will discuss methods to take care of the environment. The aim: preventing the materialization of some forecasts estimating that the average temperature of the Earth will increase by six degrees.
But the good news is that, this time, the most important country of the world (due to its political, economic and gas emission capacities) committed its support. Barack Obama’s innovative administration wants to make a difference regarding the previous US governments and contribute -at least a little- to reduce the contamination levels of the country.
Notwithstanding the costs, this must be considered to be a positive thing. It is impossible for a country like the US to change overnight. It has been ruled by much radicalized conservative positions for a long time. Obama probably won’t lead an environmental revolution in his country, nor a social or political one either. But the fact that the US will stop focusing on itself and start accepting the fact that it’s a part of the global planet we’re living in is very positive.
The main article of this Opinión Sur Joven issue talks about this subject, which we consider to be essential for the future of the world: the materialization of a new Kyoto Protocol, this time with the participation of the United States. Let’s hope actions speak louder than words.
