We all know that 2009 was a difficult year for everyone because of the global economic crisis that began late last year. The crisis has hit non-profit organizations even harder because of their dependency on donations from companies or individuals who decide to spend part of their income or profits on causes they consider important. When choosing Opinión Sur, they are supporting an NGO that promotes social, economic and environmental development in the region. It would be hypocritical to talk about “social responsibility” when people are being laid off as a result from the global economic crisis.
Many financers of NGOs (we were not an exception) cut funding order to mitigate the crisis. In our case, we were forced to spend most of our reserves, which means that we will temporarily discontinue the translation of Opinión Sur Joven into English and Portuguese until we can sort out our finances.
However, it was not all bad news. Fortunately, we have developed our product and have also doubled the number of visits to our website. We have also built up alliances with various organizations in order to work together on new projects.
We hope that the interruption of the English and Portuguese publications will be temporary. Because of this, we are appealing to all those who want to help us through this difficult time. Click here to learn how you can help.
We thank readers’ collaborations and wish everyone an excellent New Year.
